Aznar, in the presentation of the FAES biography 'Lerroux, the liberal republic' Aznar: "We cannot make the mistake of entrusting our future to the conjunction of the left and the nationalists that has brought us to this situation"

    - “Catalonia will be the main responsibility for any future government and the extent to which we will hold it accountable for its work”

    - “How is it possible that the same failure is repeated over and over again in Catalonia? How is defeat presented as triumph and disloyalty as a political virtue?"

    - He recalled "that the campaign of pardons was already made in 1934 with the ancestors of those who now sit in the bench of the Supreme Court"

    - "There is a commitment to the continuity of the democratic Spain that we cannot let lose, nor must we dodge"

    - The Second Spanish Republic. "An essential period in our history from which we must continue to learn, from its democratic deficiency, failed expectations and sectarian exclusion"

    - “The voice of exile, the lucidity of those who were and felt defeated, he wanted to give a lesson of unity that today does not seem to be heard"

    - "It is regrettable that today we have to ask ourselves about the meaning of this great effort of unity and overcoming the past"

    Alejandro Lerroux
"With his successes and errors, he knew how to evolve from the radical vision of the republican left to a moderate and democratic liberalism"

    - "Was his opposition to Catalanism and all separatist nationalism was one of the constants in his life"

    - "Lerroux wanted to reach an agreement for the general interest. Those values remind us of those that made the Transition and the 1978 Constitution possible”

"I do not quite understand how it is possible for the same failure to be repeated over and over again in Catalonia. How defeat is presented as a triumph and disloyalty as a political virtue", said today the former president of the Government and president of FAES, José María Aznar, in the presentation of the biography Lerroux. La República liberal, by Roberto Villa, published by the foundation. In this sense he recalled "that the campaign for pardons was already made in 1934 with the predecessors of those who now sit in the bench of the Supreme Court," and stated that "as errors are being repeated, others cannot commit the mistake of entrusting our future to the conjunction of the left and the nationalists that has brought us to this situation”.

For Aznar, Catalonia and the challenge to the Spanish nation "is the most serious responsibility that any future government is going to face and will be the measure by which we will demand accountability for their work”. He also said, "there is a commitment to the continuity of a democratic Spain that we cannot let loose, nor must we dodge. It is a commitment to democracy, to freedom, to the nation of free and equal Spaniards".

Lerroux. La República liberal is the last volume of the collection of FAES Political Biographies, in which a special interest for the politicians of the Second Republic is perceived. "An essential period in our history from which we must continue to learn, from its civic shortcomings, from democratic deficiency, from failed expectations. From its fair share of sectarian exclusion," explained Aznar. Also taking part in the presentation were the author of the book, the professor of Political History at the Rey Juan Carlos University, Roberto Villa García, and the professor of Political Science Andrés de Blas.

The former president of the Government has considered that, "with his successes and mistakes, Lerroux knew how to evolve from the radical vision of the republican left to a moderate and democratic liberalism".  "One of the constants during his life was his opposition to Catalanism and all sort of separatist nationalism", he stressed that the leader of the Radical Party "wanted to reach an agreement for the general interest. These values remind us of those that made the Transition and the Constitution of 1978 possible".
