FAES Foundation publishes the number 62 of the journal Cuadernos de Pensamiento Político, directed by Javier Zarzalejos, and where we can find political articles, cultural essays, texts and historical reflections and the complete interview with the historian Stanley G. Payne. Among other issues, this number analyses the commitment of liberalism facing the nationalism in Cataluña, “the traumatic and severe tear” that threatens the Spanish right, the challenge of adjusting the labour market to the Artificial Intelligence, the different challenges that the European Union is facing in 2019, the risks of the comeback to Spain of the returned from the caliphate, and the false milestones of the Marxist historiography.

The Editorial Note focuses on the campaign of the general elections on the next 28th of April. FAES believes that this campaign concentrates on two evidences: the first one is that the offer of PSOE is an imposture that reflects the extremism, the territorial disintegration and the economic collapse which was led by Zapatero; and the second one is that if the vote of the left is concentrated and the vote of the right is dispersed, the way to Moncloa will be fatally paved for the “Frankenstein coalition”.

The main topic of this Cuadernos 62 is the extensive interview to the American historian and hispanist  Stanley G. Payne led by the professor Roberto Villa García, in which he reviews his work and his intense dedication to the Spanish history and in which, literally expresses that “the Second Republic was close to constitute a manual about the mistakes that should not be committed to build and consolidate a democracy”.

The first of the articles of this number reproduces the conference of the former president of the Spanish Government and the current president of FAES, Jose María Aznar, to the students from David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies of the Birmingham Yung University of Utah (USA). Under the title Europa en la encrucijada (Europe in the crossroad), this text begins with the numerous challenges that the European Union must face in 2019: Brexit, elections to the European Parliament, the refugee crisis management, immigration… To face them, Aznar opts for a defence of the liberal order and the continuity in the EU “a vivid illustration of a successful process of integration and the best example of what the liberal democracy, the social economy, the free trade and the globalization can achieve”.

In Un compromiso frente al nacionalismo populista en Cataluña (A commitment facing the populist nationalism in Cataluña), a text edited from the intervention in Europe Forum of the president of the Partido Popular in Catalonia, Alejandro Fernández, he considers that “Catalonia has become in the epicentre of the liberal democracy crisis in Europe” and that the best solution to the populist nationalist virus is “the reconstruction of the liberal centre-right”.

The future of the ideas
The political scientist Miguel Ángel Quintanilla Navarro details in the El syndrome Popeye (The Popeye syndrome)  the “traumatic and severe tear” suffered by the Spanish right since the “discurso de Elche” in 2008. And he maintains that, in light of the uncertain climate, the elector must choose between two options: “resist without winning” or “winning to govern”. And the professor Jorge de Palacio suggests an interesting intellectual exercice in the Huntington vs. Fukuyama.El gran debate de la post Guerra Fría (Huntington vs. Fukuyama. The debate on the post-Cold War period) confronting the thesis about the ‘clash of civilizations’ thesis with the thesis about the ‘end-of-history’ in which it is addressed the moral superiority or not on the principles of occidental liberalism. At the same time, the professor Ana Capilla Casco, in El populismo y la próxima generación de perdedores (Populism and the next generation of losers) writes about a vital challenge for the advanced societies: ¿how should we approach the global labor markets in light of the unstoppable development of the Artificial Intelligence?

Iran and the return of the Yihad
Cuadernos de Pensamiento Político 62 also includes two texts about international relations from a practical point of view. The first one, Pragmatismo revolucionario: Irán ante los retos de su política exterior (Revolutionary pargmatism: Iran facing the challenges of its foreign policy), by the professor Javier Gil Guerrero, reviews the influences of the Persian State in the region, its allies and enemies, and its changing relations with USA, Europe and the Arabic monarchies. The second one, by the professor Carlos Echeverría and under the title La amenaza terrorista para España de los retornados desde el embrión califal, (The terrorist threat for Spain due to the returned from the caliphate) it studies the effects of the comeback, being as it is Spain, the first country in EU in detentions to jihadists  in the latest years.

Aberri Eguna the communist repression
In the historical field, we can find the essay Aberri Eguna: el primer engaño del nacionalismo vasco a sus seguidores (Aberri Eguna: the first deceit of basque nationalism to its follers) by professor Pedro José Chacón Delgado, who gives enough data to affirm that the so-called ‘revelación de 1882’, originally founded in the Basque nationalism, it was an invention by Sabino Arana. The following text, Control y represión. Los servicios secretos del comunismo (Control and repression. The secret service of comunism) the writer Josep Carles Lainex talks about the book of José M. Faraldo ‘las redes del terror’ the horror, crimes, repression of the old police of the URSS and the already extinct communist  regimes of Eastern Europe.

Cuaderno de cultura.- Marxism vs. Liberlalism
The section Cuaderno de cultura (culture) is occupied by two articles. In La historia como culto al fracas y al rencor (The history as a workship to failure and resentment), The historian and scholar Luis Arranz Notario offers a review to the fake milestones of the Marxist history, justifying any excess committed under the name of the people and that, in our country, the captain was Josep Fontana, advocated also of the independentist cause in Catalonia. Finally, El exilio interior de Alexis de Tocqueville (The internal exile of Alexis of Tocqueville), by the profesor Antonio R. Rubio Pio, is a revindication of the liberal cosmovision by the French thinker and a tour through the figure of the politician and the historian who found in the ideas an engine for a social change.
