Finland´s and Sweden´s bid to join NATO: Implications for the European security architecture

As highly developed security providers, both Finland and Sweden would bring an added value to NATO allies. As demonstrated by their military strength, it is highly unlikely that Russia would be able stop their accession by military force, at least not while it is simultaneously engaged in Ukraine. It is more likely, that their NATO membership could be delayed, or in worst case blocked, by political maneuvering within NATO allies. Recent comments by Turkey´s President Erdogan showcase that the way to NATO might not be a dance on roses for the two Nordics, as an accession to NATO requires the approval of all 30 current members.
